As well being a lawn tennis player, Dr Otto Nirrnheim was an important figure in the early decades of the sport in Germany. In 1902, he was one of the co-founders of the German Lawn Tennis Federation (Deutscher Lawn-Tennis-Bund), an organisation he would later head. Dr Otto Nirrnheim was killed at the start of World War One, during the Battle of Vermelles, in the French department of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, while fighting as part of the 3rd Company of German Grenadier Regiment No. 110.
