About

Gustav Jaenecke attended secondary school in his native Berlin and, after successfully taking his final exam, began an apprenticeship at a bank in the German capital before becoming a full-time bank employee. He also completed an apprenticeship as a shoemaker in his family’s business, the Jaenecke Schusterei, which was the first shoemaking company to be established in Berlin.

Gustav Jaenecke devoted much of his free time to his two passions – lawn tennis and ice hockey. At an early age he joined the renowned Berliner Schlittschuh-Club/Ice Skating Club in Berlin and would later represent the same club both nationally and internationally at ice hockey. He was 13-time German ice hockey champion with the Berliner Schlittschuh-Club and another club, the SC Riessersee, and represented Germany at the same sport at the Winter Olympic Games more than once.

During World War Two, his family’s business made shoes for disabled soldiers and civilians, and because of this Gustav Jaenceke didn’t have to join the German Army. After the war he continued to enjoy success at ice hockey. However, his family’s shoemaking business, located in East Berlin, was expropriated by the communists. Gustav Jaenecke therefore left the new East Germany for West Germany. In later life he was administrative head of a casino in the spa town of Bad Neuenahr.
