About

John Frederick Stokes was born on 7 July 1876 in All Saints’ Vicarage, Newtownpark, Blackrock, County Dublin. He was the second of the four children – two sons and two daugthers – of the Reverend George Thomas Stokes (1843-98), a clerk in holy ordres and ecclesiatical historian, and his first wife, Frances Stokes (née Pusey; 1843-80), who was originally from England.

Frances Stokes died in late January 1880, three weeks after the birth of her daughter, Fanny Eileen Maude Stokes. John Stokes was only three years old at the time of his mother’s death. In July 1883, Reverend George Stokes married, as his second wife, Katherine Isabella Dudgeon (c. 1854-1938), with whom he had one child, a son called Henry James Dudgeon Stokes.

John Stokes was one of Ireland’s top lawn tennis players for more than two decades. He excelled at doubles, notably winning the men’s doubles title at the Irish Championships eight times: in 1904 (w. Frederick Payn), 1905 (w. Alexander H. Porter), from 1909 to 1912 (w. Jame C. Parke), in 1919 (w. Simon Scroope) and in 1921 (w. Cecil Campbell). He also won the mixed doubles event at the same tournament twice: in 1908 (w. Edith Boucher) and in 1911 (w. Orea Moustaka Beatty).

John Stokes was a stockbroker by profession. On 26 April 1912, he married Eva Jane Wilson, daughter of William Henry Wilson of Carrickmines, County Dublin, in Tullow Parish Church, Tullow, County Carlow. A daughter, Pamela Stokes, was born of the marriage. John Stokes died in Dublin 2 July 1937, five days before what would have been his 61st birthday. Eva Stokes died in Dublin in May 1955.
