About

Thomas Douglas Good was born in 1874 in Ceylon. He was the fifth of the seven children – four sons and three daughters – of Reverend Thomas Good (1842-1925), a clerk in holy orders from County Cork, and Susan Good (née Brodie; 1841-1926), who was from Dumfriesshire in Scotland. Thomas Good and Susan Brodie were married on 13 November 1867 in Bombay, India.

Thomas D. Good was one of Ireland’s top lawn tennis players for nearly two decades. In 1904 and 1907, he was runner-up in the men’s singles event at the Irish Championships. At the same tournament he won the men’s doubles title in 1907 (w. Herbert N. Craig).

Good also excelled at badminton. He won the men’s doubles title at the Irish Open Badminton Championships three times: in 1904, 1907 and 1908 (all with Blayney Hamilton). In 1913, he won the same event at the Irish Closed Badminton Championships (w. Arthur Cave).

On 20 October 1903, in Dublin, Thomas D. Good married fellow Dubliner Ada Baillie Carroll (1879-1958). She was also a badminton player. They had four children together – two sons and two daughters – three of whom also became lawn tennis and badminton players: Dereen Ada Lucy Good, Barbara Good and Norman Douglas Good. Their other son was Colin Baillee Good.

Thomas Douglas Good was a medical doctor by profession. He died in Dublin on 26 April 1958 at the age of 83. Ada Good had died in Dublin two months earlier at the age of 78.
