About

He served as tennis captain at Yale in 1942. He won a national senior doubles title, and reached the final round at Wimbledon in senior doubles. Locally, he won the Greater Springfield singles title 22 times - a record.

tournament player, official, and generous benefactor of his sport in New England and nationally.

As a player, he ranked No. 1 in New England in 1949 and was in the Top 10 for a dozen years. Later, he received several national senior singles and doubles rankings.

In 1964-65, he served as president of the New England Lawn Tennis Association. He chaired many United States Lawn Tennis Association committees, and was New England delegate to the USLTA from 1960 to 1966.

As a benefactor, he founded the Youth Tennis Foundation of New England and was a life member and strong supporter of the National Tennis Educational Foundation. In 1969, he donated 10 life memberships in the NTEF, most of which he made available to promising New England juniors.

Robert J. Freedman passed away in 1971. In his eulogy, former NELTA president Harry Kirsch said, "His acquaintances included the rich, the smart, and the beautiful people of the world - yet his true devotions were to his mother and several old tennis friends. He was fiercely loyal to his hometown of Springfield, Mass."
