About

Thomas Clark Bundy was born in October 1881 in Santa Monica, California. He was the fifth of the six children – five sons and one daughter – of Nathan Pearl Bundy (1846-1913) and Harriet Bundy (née Smith; 1850-1922). Both parents were originally from Ohio and grew up in Quaker families. Thomas Bundy would later work as a real estate salesman.

On 11 December 1912, in Los Angeles, Thomas Bundy married May Godfrey Sutton (1887-1975) of the famous lawn tennis-playing family. She had won the women’s singles title at the U.S. Championships in 1904 and the same title at Wimbledon in 1905 and 1907. They had four children together, three sons and one daughter. Their daughter, Dorothy (1916-2014; later Mrs Cheney), won the women’s singles title at the Australian Championships in 1938. Thomas and May Bundy subsequently divorced.

An excellent lawn tennis player himself, Thomas Bundy reached the challenge round in the men’s singles event at the U.S. Championships in 1910 before losing a five-set match to William Larned, the defending champion. At the same tournament Bundy notably won the men’s doubles title three times in a row (1912-14) with fellow Californian Maurice McLoughlin.
