The heir to a large fortune, Herbert Harriman attended Princeton University, but did not really pursue a profession in later life, instead becoming a socialite. During World War One, he served in the American Expeditionary Forces section of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Meadow Brook Golf Club, The Brook, the Turf and Field Club and the Piping Rock Club. An excellent golfer, he notably won the U.S. Amateur Golf Championships title in 1899 when the event was held at the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. Other winners of the same event include Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
