Richard Stevens was the third child and the youngest son of Edwin Augustus Stevens and Martha Bayard Dod. Richard attended Saint Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire, and was in 1890 graduated from Columbia University, and from Columbia University Law School two years later. He was admitted to the Bar in 1893, but never devoted his time to the practice of that profession.

A lover of outdoor amusements, Stevens won the men’s singles title at the Middle States Tennis Championships and the New Jersey State Championships. He was essentially a baseline player. He was at one point Treasurer of the United States Tennis Association (U.S.T.A.) and also a member of Saint George’s Cricket Club, which was originally located in Manhattan, but was later moved to Hoboken, New Jersey.
