About

From Lawn Tennis and Badminton, 8 May 1913:

The Late Mr Louis J. Grant

We regret to report the death of Louis J. Grant, the father of Wylie C. Grant, the well-known American player. Mr Grant died in New York on March 26, after a short illness, which was not at first regarded seriously. The following appreciation appears in American Lawn Tennis of April 15:

“For a great many years Mr Grant was a well-known figure in the lawn tennis world, both here and abroad. He was the father of Wylie C. Grant, five times national indoor champion, and was himself a keen player possessed of a sound knowledge of the game and making his strokes in excellent form, following the best British methods in so doing. During the past two or three years he has played comparatively little, increasing age – he was 61 – and weight (he was a big, heavily-built man, weighing upwards of 200 pounds), as well as the demands of business operating to this end.

“Louis J. Grant was born at Banagher, King’s County, Ireland, March 9, 1853, in a house which has been in the Grant family for many generations and descends by his death to his son, Wylie. He came to this country in his youth and studied law. In June, 1876, he married Miss Alie E. Wylie, of Brooklyn, after whom their son is named. His law practice, in which he was associated with Jacob Rouss under the firm name of Grant and Rouss, was confined chiefly to criminal work, much of it having to do with the defence of policemen, firemen and other city employees. He was very successful and built up a lucrative practice.

“In his youth Mr Grant was very fond of cricket, playing the game both in Ireland and here. He was also interested in baseball, and for years played with some of the strongest amateur teams in New York. Lawn tennis next engrossed his attention, and for more than twenty years he followed it both here and abroad. He was one of the guiding spirits of the old New York Lawn Tennis Club, which had grounds at 147th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue, and which in the 1890s had as members the Hobarts (Clarence, John and William), Stephen C. Millett, Charles MacMullen and other notables.

“When this club disbanded, the right to use the name was given to the Lenox Tennis Club, and it has been retained ever since. For years Mr Grant has been much interested in tennis at the armories, and it was largely through his efforts that the privilege of playing in the 69th Regiment Armory was obtained four years ago.

“Few men were better posted on lawn tennis than the deceased. He visited the ‘old country’ nearly every summer, frequently accompanied by his son; and the two played together on a number of occasions a decade or more ago. He knew all the prominent players and was full of interesting stories regarding them, some of which have been told in American Lawn Tennis. He loved to talk tennis, and when he indulged in reminisce he was very entertaining. He was usually addressed as ‘Squire’ by those who knew him.”
