The lawn tennis player Henry Slocum attended Yale University (B.A. 1883) before obtaining a Bachelor of Laws (L.LB) from George Washington University in 1885. He practised as a lawyer in New York City from 1885 until 1925, when he retired. He was also a member of the New York Stock Exchange.

While at Yale, Slocum served as private tutor and was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He was also president of the university tennis and lawn tennis clubs, and won the men’s singles event at the ‘varsity lawn tennis tournament in the autumn of 1882 and the spring of 1883.

Slocum’s greatest successes on the lawn tennis court came in 1888 and 1889, when he won the men’s singles event at the U.S. Championships. In 1889, together with Howard Taylor, he also won the men’s doubles title at the same tournament. In the challenge round they defeated the holders, Oliver Campbell and Valentine Hall, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Slocum wrote the book Lawn Tennis in Our Own Country, which was first published in 1890. He served as President of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association in 1892 and 1893. In 1888, in New York City, Slocum married Grace Edsall, daughter of Henry and Emma Edsall. They had two daughters: Gertrude and Natalie.

Grace Slocum died on 22 January 1949, a few hours before her husband, Henry, who died of a stroke. He was 86.
