About

James Zimmermann was one of the nine surviving children of Alfred August Zimmermann, a merchant involved in the chemicals industry, and Therese Zimmermann. Both of his parents were born in Germany, but later became British citizens. Following the outbreak of World War One and hostilities with Germany, James Zimmermann appears to have changed his surname to Mann. He married Claire Hampton Wallis in Brighton, Sussex, on 15 July 1916, but they did not have any children. He was killed in action in northern France in May 1917 while serving as a sergeant with the Honourable Artillery Company of the British Army.
