About

Donald Stewart was the son of John Stewart (1822-90), who was born on Bermuda and a barrister-at-law by profession, and Anne Stewart (née Winslow), who was from London. Like his father before him, Donald Stewart studied law and qualified as a barrister-at-law. Donald’s early death in September 1885 at the age of 26 robbed the lawn tennis world of a gifted player.

From Lawn Tennis Recollections (1898), by Herbert Chipp:

“For charm of style nobody could excel Donald Stewart – a most finished player, and one who had the advantage of constant practice with the Renshaws. In addition to his fine volleying powers, his back-court game was of a very high order indeed. One stroke I particularly remember – made with great power and precision from corner to corner of the court.

“Stewart was a good cricketer too, and a most charming companion. Never shall I forget the shock I experienced on taking up The Field one September day in the year 1885 in a remote corner of Ireland, to read of his premature death from typhoid fever at the early age of 25. I had played him in the final of the Chiswick Park open singles only a few short weeks before – the least lawn tennis match he ever took part in.”

From The Sportsman, 26 September 1885:

“Donald Stewart, the dashing lawn tennis player, who was by many thought to possess much of the Renshaw grace and style, succumbed to a virulent attack of typhoid fever, after a few days’ illness, at Sheringham, Norfolk, not long after his success at Chiswick Park.

“I little thought that when I saw that marvellous match between Stewart and Ernest Renshaw on the first Saturday in July [1885 at Wimbledon] that he would so soon cross the bourne whence there is no return, and being such a good all-round athlete his death will, I am sure, evoke universal regret.”
