William Ryves was born in British India in 1853 and was later employed in the British Indian Civil Service. He was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Frederick Ryves. They were two of the seven sons of William Henry Ryves, a career soldier in the British Indian Army, and Emma Ryves (née Maxwell).
