Dr Harold Fitzgerald Sloan was the son of Harold Alexander Sloan and Mabel Sloan (née Fitzgerald). Harold Fitzgerald Sloan attended Malvern College in England from 1927 to 1931 before going to Trinity College, Dublin, where he was a student in the School of Physics and Dentistry (B.A., M.B., B.Ch.). He was also a member of both the tennis and hockey clubs during his time at Trinity College.
During World War II, Harold Fitzgerald Sloan served as Surgeon-Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on H.M.S. Javelin. This ship was attacked by three German destroyers on the night of 29 November 1940 and was hit by two torpedoes, causing the after-magazine to explode and killing 3 officers and 43 ratings. 26-year-old Dr Harold Fitzgerald Sloan was among the dead.
