John Raphael Wentworth Savile, 7th Earl of Mexborough of Lifford, was born on 11 October 1906. He was the son of John Henry Savile, 6th Earl of Mexborough of Lifford and Honorable Margaret Eva de Burgh Knatchbull-Hugessen. He married Josephine Bertha Emily Fletcher, daughter of Captain Andrew Mansel Talbot Fletcher and Frances Jane Winnington, on 23 July 1930.

He was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, England He graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the West Riding of Yorkshire between 1935 and 1947. He graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1938 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)

He fought in the Second World War. He gained the rank of Captain in the Intelligence Corps. He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bihar between 1944 and 1945. He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Mexborough of Lifford, County Donegal on 16 September 1945.

He succeeded as the 7th Baron Pollington of Longford, County Longfordon 16 September 1945. He succeeded as the 7th Viscount Pollington of Ferns on 16 September 1945. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the North Riding of Yorkshire in 1947. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the North Riding of Yorkshire in 1967. He died on 15 July 1980 at age 73.
