Obituary – Mr Anthony Prinsep

Mr Anthony Leyland Prinsep, the theatrical manager, died at his home in London yesterday, at the age of 54. The second son of the late Val Prinsep, R.A., he was born on September 21, 1888, and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. For three years he represented the University at lawn tennis.

He became a Lloyd’s underwriter, and during the last war served as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (R.N.V.R.). He managed the Globe Theatre from 1918-28, during which period L’Aiglon and Our Betters were among the plays produced there. In 1923 Prinsep produced The Prisoner of Zenda at the Haymarket; and he was also responsible for the Italian season with Ruggero Ruggeri at the Globe in 1926.

He was twice married, first to Marie Löhr, and secondly to Margaret Bannerman, but both marriages were dissolved. Prinsep was a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur/Knight of the Legion of Honour.
