Fritz Lichtschein started as a field hockey goalkeeper at the Verein für Motionspiele in 1918 before moving to Wiener AC in 1920. During a stay in Germany he played, among others, at SC Frankfurt 1880 and in France at Stade Francais. He played for the Austrian national hockey team at the 1928 Summer Olympics.
Between 1927 and 1930 he was also active as an ice hockey goalkeeper for the Vienna Ice Skating Club. With the Austrian national ice hockey team he took part in the 1929 European Ice Hockey Championships (winning the bronze medal) and the 1930 Ice Hockey World Championships (4th place, bronze medal in the European Championship standings).
In addition to ice and field hockey, he also played tennis for Wiener AC.
In field hockey he also worked as an official and referee. He died as a result of appendicitis in March 1932.
