About

In the years leading up to World War Two, Waldemar Munk, a doctor of law and lawyer, was living with his wife, Gertrud, and their daughter, Eva, in his native Vienna. In the 1920s in particular, both Waldemar and Gertrud Munk had enjoyed success at tournaments in central and southern Europe. By 1935, Waldemar Munk had become vice-president of the Wiener Athletiksport Club, a prestigious sports club in Vienna; at one stage he was also the legal representative for the First Vienna FC, a football club based in the Döbling district of Vienna.

The Munk family were Jewish and, after the “Anschluss”, or annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938, the family of three left Austria and sailed from Rotterdam to California, where they later successfully petitioned to become American citizens. A number of the Munks’ relatives were not so lucky and died in ghettoes or concentration camps created by the Nazis.
