Alfred Popp was the son of fellow lawn tennis player Antonie Clara Popp (née Kusenberg), who was the sister of Countess Clara von der Schulenburg, a lawn tennis player who enjoyed significant success at tournaments on the European Continent during the early years of the sport’s popularity in the years leading up to World War One. Countess Clara von der Schulenburg divorced her first husband in 1906 and married, secondly, Count Viktor von Voss, the early German lawn tennis champion, in 1928. Although he didn’t take part in many tournaments, Alfred Popp, a doctor of law, did enter Wimbledon in 1911.
