About

Hugh Adair Nisbet was born in June 1873 in London. He was the son of Hary Curtis Nisbet, a solicitor, and Louise Margaret Kelso Nisbet (née Bruce). The lawn tennis player’s first name is erroneously listed as Harold in some sources. He later became a civil servant.

On a visit to the United States in the summer of 1897, Hugh Nisbet notably reached all-comers’ final in the men’s singles event at the U.S. Championships, and the final match in the men’s doubles at the same tournament. In the singles event he was defeated by Wilberforce Eaves, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2, while in the doubles event Nisbet and Harold Mahony lost to the Americans George Sheldon and Leonard Ware, 13-11, 2-6, 7-9, 1-6, 6-1.

Nisbet was also runner-up in the men’s doubles event at Wimbledon four times. In 1896, he and Reginald Doherty were defeated by the Baddeley twins, Herbert and Wilfred, 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. In 1898, Nisbet and Clarence Hobart lost to Doherty and his brother Lawrence, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. In 1899, Nisbet and Hobart were again beaten by the Doherty brothers, this time 7-5, 6-0, 6-2. In 1900, Nisbet and Herbert Roper Barrett lost to the Dohertys, 9-7, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.

In the years circa 1911, Hugh Nisbet lived in Hong Kong with his wife. While there, Nisbet took part in the early Hong Kong National Grass Court Championships with great success. A son, also called Hugh Adair Nisbet (1915-54), was born to Nisbet and his wife, Flora (known as ‘Flossie’). The family later moved back to England.

H.A. Nisbet was the first Hong Kong National Singles Champion by virtue of his triumph at the inaugural Hong Kong National Grass Court Championships in 1911. In fact, he completed a hat-trick of titles by claiming the next two championships in 1913 and 1914 as well. He was also a runner-up in 1917. His success on grass was probably due to his earlier achievements prior to coming to Hong Kong, as Wimbledon records showed a certain H.A. Nisbet being a 3-time Wimbledon Men’s Doubles Finalist in the years 1898, 1899, and 1900.
