Edward O. Mather was a direct descendant of the famous New England Puritan Minister Cotton Mather (1663-1728). In the late 1920s, Edward was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, England, and represented that university in the annual Oxford versus Cambridge Varsity matches during his time there. He later worked as a lawyer.
