As a Junior and Senior, he did not lose a set in any high school competition while winning two State Singles Championships at the #1 position. In Missouri Valley play, he was ranked #2 in Boys 18-under Singles and #1 in Boys 18-under Doubles with Paul Lockwood.
He went to the University of Oklahoma on a tennis scholarship where he was a two-time Big 8 Singles and Doubles Champion. He holds the O.U. record for victories in a single year with 27. He also has the O.U. record for career wins with 95. He was team Captain in 1974.
After graduating from O.U., he achieved the #2 ranking in the Men's Open division in the Missouri Valley. He also won two Missouri Valley Open Doubles Championships and two Missouri Valley Mixed Doubles Championships.
