Noted Tennis Player – The Late Mr Augustus Wallace MacGregor

The death occurred on Saturday in Hawick Cottage Hospital of Mr Augustus Wallace Macgregor, LLB., W.S, 19 Linden Terrace, Hawick, who was well known in tennis circles, both as player and administrator.

Mr MacGregor, who was admitted a writer to the signet (W.S.) in 1892, partnered Charles R.D. Pritchett in winning the men’s doubles in the Scottish Championships in 1900 and 1902, while in 1903 he and Frederick W. Payn were the winners. In 1905, 1906, 1907, and 1909 he and Alexander M, Mackay were the winners. He also won the mixed doubles in 1903 along with Miss Stoltz, and in1910 along with Mrs Ethel Larcombe.

Mr MacGregor also won the men’s singles on several occasions in the South of Scotland tournament, and was in the winning pair in the men’s and mixed doubles. He played for Scotland against Belgium in 1914. For a long period Mr MacGregor was secretary of the East of Scotland Lawn Tennis Association, and later of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association, of which he was a past president. About two years ago he was elected an honorary life vice-president of the Scottish Association.
