From The Times, 6 December 1944: Major D.T.R. Larcombe, of Budleigh Salterton, Devon, late secretary and manager of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, died on Sunday at the age of 65. Dudley Thomas Reynolds Larcombe, born in 1879, son of Thomas Larcombe, was educated at King’s College School. From 1907 to 1913 he held a commission in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, and in the last war served from 1914 t o 1919 in the Royal Army Pay Corps, retiring as major. In his younger days he was a good hockey player, appearing for Middlesex. For a time he was games manager at Roehampton, and he was an assistant referee at the Wimbledon Championships. But his name will be best remembered, however, as the manager for 14 years before he retired of the famous annual tennis tournament at Wimbledon. He married in 1906 Ethel Warneford Thomson, daughter of Herbert Warneford Thomson, M.D. She is a former Wimbledon champion [having won the women’s single title in 1912].
