James Horkheimer was the son of Otto Moritz Horkheimer and Augusta Julia Emma Horkheimer (née Sichel), both of whom were originally from Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany, but later emigrated to England. James Horkheimer was an insurance manager by profession. He and his siblings appear to have changed their Germanic surname, Horkheimer, to Hawke following the outbreak of World War One.
