About

From The Western Daily Press, 10 May 1948:

The Late Mr John M. Boucher

It is with regret that we have to record the death of Mr John Mycroft Boucher which occurred on Friday at his residence, Dengarth, Leigh Woods. He was a member of a very well-known Bristol family. His father, the late Mr John Boucher, who died in 1905, was for many years associated with the firm – at one time known as Ferris, Boorne, Townsend and Boucher, chemists, of Union Street, which now carries on business in Saint Stephen Street. His elder brother, the late Mr Charles Boucher, was a prominent Bristol archaeologist and his surviving brothers are Mr George Boucher and Colonel Frank Boucher.

Fine Tennis Player

Mr Mycroft Boucher was a notable lawn tennis player. He is remembered as a member of the old Rustics Club, formed nearly 60 years ago by the late Mr James Hart, whose courts were at Cranbrook Road, near Zetland Road. In later years he was a member of the Clifton Club and contemporary of Arnold W. Blake, Francis Stoddard, Arthur and Frank Riseley and Sidney Smith, of Stroud. In open tournament play he achieved many successes including the Northern Championship, the Welsh Championships and the Gloucestershire Championships on several occasions.

His partiality was for singles and he was really a great baseline player, with remarkable accuracy in his drives. With others Mr Mycroft Boucher did much to popularise lawn tennis in this district, and he was the donor of the courts at Saint Andrews, used by the Bristol Central Conservative Club.
