His parents were technical consultants, engineers and operations managers at AS Kværner Bruk, Hjalmar Marinius Smith (b.5 December 1839, Larvik-d.8 December 1907) and Fanny Maria Firth (b.9 October 1850, Sheffield, England).
During the census in 1900, the family lived in Fearnleys Gade 8 in Kristiania.
Trygve was the youngest of 5 brothers, all sports boys, and the youngest was taught by the older brothers

He represented the ski club Verdande and Oslo ski club.
Trygve's brothers Hjalmar and Harald Smith are also seen on a number of results lists from this time.

Won the show jumping in Bragebakken in Slottskogen as a student at Chalmerska.
The competition which took place in the winter of 1902 was divided into 2 classes, one of which was for - native - Swedes and Norwegians who studied at the Chalmerska Institute. The longest jump was delivered by Trygve Smith and measured 23 metres. He also won 1st prize, which was a share in a walking trophy. His brother Harald Smith received 4th prize.

Together with his brother Harald, Trygve was among Kristiania's foremost skiers at this time.
In the early winter of 1906, the brothers Harald and Trygve Smith went from Kristiania to St. Moritz to become ski instructors.
Together with his brother, he founded the ski slopes in Davos and St. Moritz.
While Harald started ski production, Trygve went to France, where one of his clients, Noemie de Rotschild (Baron Maurice de Rotschild's wife), wanted to create a resort for ski activities, the French resort of St.Moritz (later Megève), in the time after 1 .world war.
Harald's ski production moved to Diessenhofen, and was later acquired by Ettinger.

He worked as an engineer. He played singles and doubles outdoors at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He won the Norwegian singles titled in 1912-15 and 1918, adding the doubles title in 1913-14 and 1916, and winning the mixed in 1912 and 1924. Smith’s son, Finn-Trygve Smith, later played Davis Cup for Norway from 1932-34, appearing in four ties.
