About

According to the Census of England taken in 1881, Rochfort Hyde Clark, then aged 22, was a retired tea planter. He married an Irish-born widow, Constance Isabelle Enery, in the summer of 1883, when he was 24 and she was 42. In the Census of England for 1891, she was living in the parish of Guilsborough, Northamptonshire, with a female cousin and a retinue of servants. Rochfort Hyde Clark was absent when the census was taken, but won the men’s singles title at the Northampton tournament in the summer of the following year, 1892. Constance Hyde Clark subsequently petitioned for divorce from Rochfort Hyde Clark, citing desertion and adultery; the divorce was granted in 1917.
