About

Luis Maria Heyden was born in Venezuela in 1893, the son of Luis Heyden and his wife Henriette Julie (formerly Mende). In 1912, Luis Maria Heyden took part in the outdoor lawn tennis events at the Summer Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden, under the German flag. He reached the quarter-finals of both the men’s singles event and, with Robert Spies, the men’s doubles event. Heyden sometimes entered lawn tennis tournaments under the pseudonym Grandi (or Grandy).

In later life Luis Maria Heyden lived in the USA, subsequently acquiring American citizenship. In the 1930 American census, he was living in rented rooms in Manhattan and working as a bank clerk. By 1937, he had married a Jeannette Lesch, who was French by birth. However, she died in early 1939 in Manhattan. Later the same year Luis Maria Heyden married again, to Harriet Nieskens, a native of Paterson, New Jersey. In the 1940 American census, they were living together in Yonkers in Westchester County, New York, with their son, also called Luis Maria, who was less than one year old at the time.

According to the 1940 American census, Luis Maria Heyden, the former tennis player, was a sales manager for a fine arts publication. Other sources had previously listed him as a merchant/importer proficient in several languages. The death indexes for New York show that a Luis M. Heyden died there in December 1951.
