About

Yevgeny Kudryavtsev (b. 1898) started playing tennis at the age of 10 on the courts of the Lakhtinsky LTK Kleverny Listok "Clover Leaf". Became champion of LTK "Cloverleaf" in 1915. During the Civil War he fought in the Red Army. After the end of the civil war he returned to playing tennis and won all events of the Petrograd Championships. On the court, Kudryavtsev stood out for his technical, varied and aggressive play, and excellent sense of the ball. He was a left-hander, his main strengths were a quick and accurate shot from the back line, an excellent volley. He did not wait for his opponent’s mistakes, but boldly went to the net, trying to “kill” the ball. His self-control and remarkable will to win helped Kudryavtsev get out of the most difficult situations. On the court he was always distinguished by his gentlemanly behavior; he was a kind of standard of a real athlete.
