Studied economic science and law at the Université de Neuchâtel; qualified as a lawyer in 1938; obtained a doctorate in law in 1952. Taught at the École de Commerce in Neuchâtel from 1942-69; later a professor at the Université de Neuchâtel where he lectured on the law of obligations.
