About

Herbert M. Tilden was the brother of William Tatem Tilden II, who won the men’s singles at Wimbledon three times and the same title at the U.S. National Championships seven times. Herbert Tilden was also a talented lawn tennis player and notably three times runner-up in the mixed doubles event at the U.S. National Championships: in 1907 (with Natalie Wildey) and in 1910 and 1911 (with Edna Wildey, Natalie’s sister).

Herbert and William were the two surviving children of William Tatem Tilden I, a wealthy businessman, and Selina Tilden (née Hey), who had lost three children, one son and two daughters, to diphtheria in quick succession in 1884. Selina Tilden died of Bright’s Disease in 1911, while William senior and Herbert died both died in 1915, leaving the future tennis champion without his parents or siblings.

Herbert M. Tilden had studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later became secretary and treasurer of the family firm, William T. Tilden, hair merchants. In 1909, he married Hazel Antoinette Megargee in Philadelphia; they had two children together, a son and a daughter. Their son, William Tatem Tilden III, also became a tennis player.
