Harry W. Burruss

Harry W. Burruss, 84, a former resident of Hamilton died July 26, at Wilson Health Care Center, in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Born in Aberdeen, Maryland in 1904, Mr. Burruss studied pre-medicine at Harvard University and went on to become a microbiologist.

Mr. Burruss' interest in yellow fever research began in 1929 when he went to Nigeria to work in the Rockefeller Foundation Yellow Fever Laboratory. In 1933 he continued his studies at the foundation's laboratories in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

In 1940 he joined Dr. Mason Hargett in the production of Yellow Fever Vaccine at Rocky Mountain Laboratories. In later years he became chief of the Yellow Fever unit.

In 1952 he and his family moved to Bethesda, Maryland where he eventually retired as chief of the Pyrogen test section in the division of Biotics Standards Laboratories at N.I.H., after 30 years of government service.

He was also a world class tennis player, and continued to enjoy watching the sport the rest of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia C. Burruss of Gaithersburg, Md.; sons Charles C. Burruss and his wife Jeanne, of Corvallis, Mont., Thomas H. Burruss and his wife Judith, of Poolesville, Md.; two grandchildren, Sandra Houtz of Seattle, and Gary Burruss of Lincoln, Neb.; and eight great-grandchildren.
