About

Marcel Dupont was born in Paris in November 1889, the son of Louis Dupont (1850-96) and Amélie Jeanne Dupont (née Collet; 1862-1938). A member of the Racing Club de France, Marcel Dupont won several singles titles during his lawn tennis career, but is best remembered as a doubles player. In 1910, he won the men’s doubles title at the French National Championships together with Maurice Germot. In the final match they beat William Laurentz and Étienne Micard, 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Twelve years later, in 1922, together with Jacques Brugnon, Dupont won the men’s doubles title at the French National Championships for the second time. In the final match they beat Jean Couitéas and André Gobert, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. One year later, in 1923, Dupont and Brugnon won the men’s doubles title at the final edition of the World Hard Court Championships in Paris, the precursor of the French International Championships. In the final they beat Léonce Aslangul and Nicolae Mişu, 10-12, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

A recurrent knee injury appears to have forced Dupont to virtually retire from lawn tennis competition after 1923. He was subsequently a member of the council of the French Tennis Federation. During World War One, he had served with distinction in the French Army and been awarded the Croix de Guerre/War Cross.

Marcel Dupont was a publicist by profession. On 28 July 1927, in Paris, he married Marie Madeleine Rey (1892-1970), who was also from Paris. They had two children together: a daughter called Françoise Germaine Marie, and a son called Jean-Louis. Marcel Dupont died in Paris in April 1975 at the age of 85.
