From The Birmingham Daily Post, 6 January 1944:

Obituary – Mr Herbert H. Monckton

The death is announced of Mr Herbert Haden Monckton, 40, Calthorpe Road, Edgbaston, a Birmingham solicitor and formerly leading figure in the lawn tennis world. Mr Monckton, who was in his eighty-third year, was head of the firm of Colmore, Monckton and West, solicitors, Waterloo Street, and a director of the British Law Insurance Company.

He was attending his office so lately as last Friday. Mr Monckton was a man of parts, who, outside a successful professional career, had distinguished himself as an amateur actor, athlete and a lawn tennis legislator. He was always devoted to outdoor sports, to music and the drama.

In sport his longest and most distinguished association was with lawn tennis, of which he was, in earlier days, a keen player, and he made an enduring mark on the game as national administrator. For a quarter of a century he was chairman of the Edgbaston Lawn Tennis Club, of which he had been a leading player. He was vice-president of the Warwickshire Lawn Tennis Association and for very many years representative on the Council of the Lawn Tennis Association.

He was twice elected chairman of the National Council, was for twelve years chairman of the Rules Committee, and many times represented the national body on the International Lawn Tennis Federation. A recognised authority on rules, he was responsible for redrafting the rules of the Lawn Tennis Association many years ago, and he revised the code at a later period. He also was a member of the joint committee responsible for the Wimbledon Championship meeting.

He had served on the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Conservative Association, though he took no prominent part in political life. He married Doris May Griffiths, the only daughter of Mr. Alfred H. Griffiths, of Edgbaston, by whom he is survived, with one daughter, Elizabeth Joyce Monckton.
