Ulrich Trettin played tennis for the TSC Berlin, an athletics and sports club founded in East Berlin in 1963. In 1967, 1968 and 1969, Trettin won the men’s singles title at the outdoor East German Tennis Championships. In 1965 and 1968, he won the men’s doubles title at the same tournament with Hans-Jürgen Luttropp.

In 1972, Trettin completed his studies at the German University for Physical Education [DHfK] in Leipzig by submitting a thesis entitled “The Development of a Programme of Tests and Standards for the Objectification of Performance-Determining Factors in the Coaching of Up-and-Coming Players by the German Tennis Federation in the German Democratic Republic”.

In his role as a coach, Trettin was responsible for, amongst others, Olaf Hansen and the record-setting GDR tennis champion Thomas Emmrich.

Trettin married figure skater Christine Errath. They later divorced. Their daughter Jenny also played competitive tennis. In 2000, Ulrich Trettin took part in the World Tennis Championships in South Africa in the over-55 age group.
