Károly Vitus played only singles at the 1906 Athina Olympics, losing in straight sets in the first round to Bohemia’s Jaroslav Žemla. We know nothing else definitive of Vitus’ life, but a Hungarian soldier of the same name was killed on 12 June 1915 during World War I. That may be the Olympian but we cannot confirm the connection. Vitus was the only Hungarian tennis player at this Olympics, although no athlete by that name was known at that time in Hungary. It is possible that Dezső Lauber, who often competed under pseudonyms, played under this name, as he was in Athina as the secretary of the Hungarian delegation.
