George Richey (1918-2008) played collegiately for the North Texas State University . He turned pro in 1947 and was ranked 25th by the Professional Lawn Tennis Association National rankings in his first year of pro competition and was ranked 13th in 1950.
Some of the players Richey defeated included nationally ranked Jimmy Evert (the father of Chris Evert), former national pro doubles champion Charlie Woods and 1939 Wimbledon finalist Elwood Cooke.
Richey was the head pro at Houston Country Club (1947-1952) when he became head coach at Rice Institute (1953-1958). In his last year at Rice, he coached the Owls to the Southwest Conference championship.
Richey coached his children, Cliff and Nancy Richey, who went on to become the most successful brother-sister duo in tennis history.
