Mr Henry R. Crossman – Accidentally shot dead – Civic and sporting career
Glen Innes, Sunday. Mr Henry Richard Crossman, 63, a prominent figure in northern legal circles, was accidentally killed on a quail shooting excursion late yesterday afternoon. While Mr Crossman was getting through a fence his gun discharged and he received the full charge in the region of the heart. Death, it is believed, was instantaneous.
Mr Crossman, who came to Glen Innes as a young man, was a principal of the legal firm of Fitzhardinge and Crossman for a time, and later took full control of the practice. He was one of the leading figures in the public and sporting life of Glen Innes. Towards the close of the nineteenth century he was a well-known tennis player. A contemporary of Horace Rice, Dudley Webb and Percy B. Coluqhoun, he represented New South Wales against Victoria nine times between 1889 and 1898. He won the singles championship of New South Wales in 1895, 1896 and 1898. He also won the metropolitan doubles with his brother, Mr Arthur E. Crossman, in 1894.
Mr Henry Crossman was also prominent in Rugby Union and cricket. In later years he took up golf and bowls, at both of which he was a player well above the average. On the administrative side his services were invaluable. He was also adept with the cue.
Mr Crossman served Glen Innes as alderman and mayor, and was associated with numerous other public bodies. He gave his legal services in an honorary capacity to many charitable and sporting organisations. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Glen Innes.
