He came into contact with tennis around 1933, after he saw Gerard van der Schroeff play against an employee of Bata. This exciting game became the first incentive for Tjin A Djie to take up tennis. He registered with Ready. Ready's top players in those days were R. Schoonhoven, T. Smith, J. Monkou, Chr. Huisden, Lam Lion, H. Thijm, A. May and the ladies A. Wright, G. Lobrechts, Wine Oostvriesland and H. Nemelc.
Already after playing for a year and a half, Leo managed to beat Harry Thijm in the final. Later, Tjin A Djie joined 'Paramaribo', where there were players such as Gerard van derschroeff, Brouwers and Wiesje de Freitas-Hirschfeld (see Gerard van derschroeff).
In 1938 he left for Curaçao and there he became a member of Racing Club Curaçao (RCC). He had only been employed by Shell for 6 months when a certain Hoyer asked him to represent Curaçao during an international meeting against Aruba.
Curaçao won this meeting and Tjin A Djie won both games he played.
From 1939 to 1942 he became champion of RCC and from 1943 to 1948 champion of Asiento.
In 1946 he came to Suriname on holiday and coincidentally the tennis national championships were organized during that period. In the final he defeated his brother Herman, while he became the men's doubles champion together with him. It should be noted that on March 26, 1958, the men's doubles Herman and Leo Tjin A Djie was defeated by Frank Yvel and Rubus Blufpand. For more than 10 years no men's doubles team had managed to achieve this feat (see tennis).
In 1948 Leo Tjin A Djie returned to Suriname and between 1948 and 1957 he became eight times national champion. He also won the mixed doubles title with Lilian Kabord many times and the men's doubles title with his brother Herman.
