Obituary – Sir Edward T. Broadhurst – Cotton Spinner and Benefactor

We regret to announce that Sir Edward Tootal Broadhurst, one of Lancashire’s greatest manufacturers and foremost public men, died at Manchester, after a brief illness, late on Thursday night. Edward Tootal Broadhurst was born on August 19, 1858, the second son of Henry Tootal Broadhurst, of Woodhill, Prestwich, Manchester. After receiving his preparatory education under Dr Huntingford at Eagle House, Wimbledon, he passed on to Winchester, and in 1876 began his business career.

Under his guidance the firm of which he was head, and which is now the Tootal Broadhurst Lee Company, Limited, became one of the greatest cotton-spinning concerns in the country. He was also a director of the London and North-Western Railway, the Atlas Insurance Company, and chairman of the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank, and served as a member of the executive of the Federation of British Industries.

Thoroughly versed in every department of his industry and well-endowed with all the attributes which make for commercial success, he was at the same time public-spirited enough not to confine his liberal qualities merely to his own commercial sphere, and many branches of the social and civic life, not merely of Manchester, but of the whole of Lancashire. felt the benefit of his energies. Although latterly his public appearances were few, his influence remained potent, and his views on all that concerned Lancashire’s staple industry were always invested with the greatest respect and authority.

Education especially had his deepest interest. His own firm has a director of education of its own, with special facilities and scholarships for its employees and a school and institute at Bolton. His benefactions, especially to Manchester University, of whose Court of Governors he was a member, were considerable, both personally and through his firm. The fine pavilion on the University’s recreation ground at Fallowfield was one of his earlier gifts.

In politics Sir Edward Broadhurst, up to the General Election of 1910, was a member of the Unionist, Party, but he then seceded on Free Trade, and was one of the chief supporters of Mr Winston Churchill when he defeated Sir William (then Mr) Joynson-Hicks on that issue in North-West Manchester. A Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire, he was also High Sheriff of the county in 1906-07.

He took a prominent part in war work, serving on the Cotton Control Board and under the Ministry of Reconstruction. He gave large sums of money to help people at home, and it was largely for this that in 1918 he was created a baronet. In celebration of peace he gave the land for a park and playing fields at Moston, a Manchester suburb, valued at £25,000.

Sir Edward Broadhurst married, in 1887, Charlotte Jane, daughter of Thomas Ashton of Ford Bank, Didsbury, Manchester, but had no children, and there is no heir to the baronetcy.
