Walther von der Meden, as he was known, was the son of another Carl August von der Meden (1841-1911), who would later be known as the founding father of German lawn tennis because of his involvement in and promotion of the sport during the earliest years of its existence in Germany. Walther von der Meden was born in England because his father lived there for several years during the latter half of the nineteenth century where he followed the early development of lawn tennis with great interest.
