Prof. Dr. Carl Angelo Knorr - Fakultät für Chemie (tum.de)
Carl Angelo Knorr was born in Jena, Saxony, in January 1894, the son of Dr Ludwig Knorr, a professor of chemistry who discovered antipyrine. Carl Knorr attended the secondary school in Jena, studied natural sciences at Oxford and, after an interruption caused by the First World War, continued his education at the University in Munich. As early as 1923, when he was still a student, he paid special attention to the quantum laws.
In 1925, Knorr obtained his doctorate, which was supervised by Dr Kasimir Fajans. From 1925 to 1932, Knorr worked for Bodenstein in Berlin and for Schumann (electrical engineering) at the Technical University in Munich. In 1934, he passed the qualifying examination for lecturing at a university, again after being supervised by Fajans in Munich. In 1939, Knorr was appointed adjunct professor there. Soon afterwards, in 1940, he was appointed professor at the University of Innsbruck in occupied Austria. He worked there for five years and was able to set up an independent physics and chemistry institute in accordance with his ideas.
In 1945, Knorr lost the chair in Innsbruck and had to return to Germany although he had never been politically active. In Munich he resumed his original work in the badly-damaged Physics, Chemistry and Electrochemical Institute at the Technical University. Despite limited resources, his work enabled him to help electrochemistry achieve a high scientific reputation at this location. In 1949, he was appointed head of the electrochemical department in the role of professor. He held this position until his death on January 12, 1960.
