The source of the following obituary is unclear:

William J. Clothier II

Valley George, Pennsylvania. William J. Clothier II, a former tennis star, international spy and grandson of the co-founder of the Strawbridge & Clothier Department Stores, died of leukaemia Saturday. He was 86. While clothier won national tennis titles he was also secretly working as a special agent for the FBI and later worked for the CIA.

Clothier, whose father, William J. Clothier, was a national singles champion in 1906, toured on the grass court tennis circuit from 1934 to 1938. Together, the two won a national father-son title twice, once beating Dwight F. Davis, the founder of the Davis Cup, and his son.

From 1952 to 1979, Clothier worked as a CIA agent, gathering intelligence and providing new identities and employment to defectors.
