About

A member of the Krestovsky Lawn Tennis Club in his native Saint Petersburg, Alexander Alenitsin was one of the best of the earliest Russian lawn tennis players. He notably won the men’s singles title at the Saint Petersburg Championships in 1909, 1910 and 1911, and the same time title at the Moscow Championships in 1910.

After the October Revolution in 1917, he remained in what was then called Petrograd as chairman of the Krestovsky Lawn Tennis Club, where he continued to organise lawn tennis competitions. However, on 15 September 1922, he was arrested by the Bolsheviks due to “contact with foreign countries” and imprisoned in the dungeons of the Cheka, the first of the Soviet secret police organisations. Alexander Alenitsin committed suicide after being subjected to torture.

Aleksandr Apollonovich Alenitsyn (in contemporary rankings and draws referred to as Alenitsyn I) had a younger brother (Alenitsyn II), who was named Aleksei (Алексей Аполлонович Аленицын) who had the same address before the war and continued playing for Petrograd after the death of his older brother.
