Edinburgh Lawyer’s Death – Former Rugby Internationalist
The death has occurred in an Edinburgh nursing home of Mr Ninian Jamieson Finlay, Writer to the Signet, who resided at 48 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh. Mr Finlay was senior partner of the firm of Bell, Bannerman and Finlay, 4 Randolph Place, and he retired from active work recently.
Mr Finlay was a son of the late Dr William Finlay, Trinity, Edinburgh, and was a native of the city. He was a younger brother of the late Lord Robert Bannatyne Finlay, a former Lord Chancellor, and was uncle of Viscount Finlay, of Nairn, one of the Judges of the King’s Bench Division. Mr Finlay was educated at Edinburgh Academy.
Mr Finlay was a former rugby internationalist, and played for Scotland on six occasions against England between 1875 and 1881, and against Ireland on three occasions within the same period. He was forward in the Edinburgh Academicals team.
Mr Finlay was admitted a member of the Society Writers to the Signet in 1883, and was one of the oldest members of the Society. He is survived by his wife [née Fordyce Aimée Warden], two sons and two daughters.
