From Lawn Tennis and Croquet, 3 September 1903:

Obituary – The late Mr Herbert Chipp

We much regret this week to have to record the sudden decease of Mr Herbert Chipp, whose death took place at Ely on Tuesday week. Some years ago, it appears, he suffered severely from pleurisy, which left a certain weakness behind, but his health has been good up to quite recently, when about three weeks ago, while staying at Reigate, he met with a serious cycle accident, which resulted in concussion of the brain, and though he had, in the main, recovered from that, it is probable that indirectly it may have paved the way to his sudden and fatal illness.

He was taken ill Friday week and was ordered to bed by his medical adviser. No serious results were then anticipated, but the disease developed rapidly, and early on Tuesday morning he died, the cause of death being laryngitis and pneumonia.

Mr Chipp, who was born in 1850, followed the profession of artist. While at school he was at first a keen cricketer, and afterwards, in 1878, became a very enthusiastic lawn tennis player. Mr Chipp’s game was essentially one of a baseliner, and having the power of playing with both hands he was most deadly in his drives and passing shots.

He played his first public match in 1882, when he was defeated by Arthur J. Stanley in the all-comers’ event at Wimbledon. In 1884 he made his way into the last four at Wimbledon, beating James Dwight and William C. Taylor in the second and third round respectively. One of his last performances was his win in 1885 in the open singles at Chiswick Park, where he defeated, amongst others, the late Harry Grove. In 1886 he was second-best to Teddy Williams in the final round of the all-comers’ singles at the Covered Court Championships and won the Kentish all-comers’ championship at Beckenham the same year.

Mr Chipp was also likewise a fine player of the double game, one of his favourite partners being Ernest Lewis. These are just a few of the successes and doings of the deceased. Of late years Mr Chipp has acted as referee and handicapper at many of the principal tournaments throughout England, and has made himself a host of friends in doing so.

The deceased gentleman contributed in no small degree to the better making known of lawn tennis, and his “Lawn Tennis Recollections” have been widely read. He acted as editor of this paper from May 1, 1897, till July 23, 1899, and he was also responsible for a good deal of the articles on lawn tennis in the New Badminton Library.

The deceased, who was a member of the Lawn Tennis Association, and likewise on the lawn tennis committee of the Queen’s Club, leaves a large circle of friends by whom he will be much regretted. The funeral took place last Friday at Ely. The deceased has left a widow and two children, to whom we beg to offer our sincere sympathy and condolence.
