A Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, England, just after World War Two; gained his blue at lawn tennis while studying there. Married fellow Australian tennis player Alison Burton in Lincoln College Chapel, Oxford, in 1947. He was later Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania and then a leading litigious practitioner, taking silk in 1977. Elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly in 1969, when the Liberal-Centre Party coalition displaced the Labour Party in government; held the seat until 1979. Was teaching law at the School of Legal Practice at the University of Tasmania at the time of his death.
