East of Scotland Championships, Saint Andrews and Liberton
The first edition of the East of Scotland Championships was held in the early 1880s in Saint Andrews, a seaside town located to the north-east of the Scottish capital Edinburgh. The surface used at this early tournament was grass. It was not held from 1893 until 1903.
In 1904, a new version of the East of Scotland Championships tournament was inaugurated at the Liberton Lawn Tennis Club in Liberton, a suburb in southern Edinburgh. This would be the venue for the tournament for almost all of the remaining years of its existence. The initial surface used at the Liberton Lawn Tennis Club was clay.
From 1983 until 1989 the tournament was sponsored by the Trustee Savings Bank (TSB).
