Auckland’s premier regional open tournament and has a long history dating back to 1885. Many of the past champions have become household names (see below). It was not played for a time during the First and Second World Wars but has otherwise been run regularly over the 127 years of Tennis Auckland’s history.
A new invitation tournament was held in Auckland in 1956. An annual event, it grew in importance and attracted major international players. The tournament called the Auckland Glass invitation, the Wills tournament, the Benson and Hedges Open and finally the Heineken Open.
The ASB Classic is the biggest men’s professional sporting event in New Zealand and has been held in Auckland since 1956. Played in the week prior to the Australian Open, the ATP World Tour 250 event is a crucial stop in preparation for the year's first Grand Slam tournament.
No tournament was held in 2021 and 2022.
